a new dawn - a vision of hope

Locality Development Plan (LDP)

Overview

The key to the Trust achieving its aims, is to ensure that as many people as possible are aware of the work of the Trust and as a consequence, feel inclined to support its work by donations.  Rotarians the world over pride themselves on the service they give and in this respect the Trust would hope that local to you will be a Rotary Club that could take the lead with this plan of creating awareness and fundraising.

Please contact us if you wish to have the details of your local Rotary Club

However, if you are a school, a company, an organisation or even an individual that feels moved to do something to help, we would welcome your endeavours and below are listed several courses of action that you may find relevant to your situation.

Please read the options below then, having selected which course of action best suits your circumstances, complete the volunteer application form.

1. Making a donation:

If you, or your school, company or organisation, feel that you wish to support the Trust by making a donation, we thank you sincerely.  The range of the Trust's work that would be supported by donations are the Literacy Box itself, bursaries and the cost of books, ordered as required, by each school.

  • A Literacy Box, with contents and including transportation to Zambia, costs £250.
  • Bursaries will be awarded to fund school fees due from pupils wishing to attend school, but who cannot afford these costs.  The fees are £30 per year for a Primary school pupil or £70 per year per pupil for Secondary school.  If you wish to support a pupil "throughout school", eg 5 years, and so safeguard the pupils place, the Trust needs to know, so that we can inform the pupil supported and they can plan for their future.
  • Books are in short supply in Zambia, but once in place in a school, should last for several years.  We will supply books through our partners Macmillan Education, as they are requested by schools.  As a consequence we cannot put a price on donations for books, other than say that any donation would be most welcome.

To make a donation, please use the secure online donation facility

2. Awaking the community:

A quick way that a community can be made aware of the work of the Trust is to involve the local media - local papers, radio and TV.  This should have the effect of creating a widespread response from a community.

Suggested action plan:

  • Whoever is taking the lead, be it a Rotary club, school, organisation or company individual, make contact with the relevant people in the media and feed them with the information they need on the Literacy in a Box Trust, so allowing them to run the human interest stories they like to.

If you need any help in this, do contact the Trust who will be able to help with pre-written press releases.

  • Offer details to the media of the Literacy in a Box Trust's web site or the local contact ( be it individual or that of the school, business or organisation you represent ) so that people who have an interest in supporting the Trust or wish to make a donation, may make contact.
  • Please make a note of the individuals contacting you, as they can form the basis of a local working group that could help build school / commercial partnerships [3 below] or encourage schools to link with their Zambian counterparts for educational and cultural exchange [4 below].

The benefits of these actions:

  • The widespread creation of awareness of the work of the Trust in the community, by using the media, will not only give the media a good quality human interest story, but will identify key individuals who wish to further support the work of the Trust and these should form the core of a Trust working group going forward in your community.
  • There should be a rapid and significant amount of "one off" donations for the Trust.

3. School / commercial partnership:

With the increasing specialisation of businesses, it is critical that students that will eventually fill positions in those companies in their community, have the relevant education and training.  Schools and businesses are being encouraged to link in their communities to mutual benefit.  Examples of mutuality are where a company may pass to a school their commercial expertise to help them run their school more efficiently, while school staff and governors could help a company better understand the educational process and how it could impact on its future workforce.

Many school/commercial partnership already exist, with many of them also working together on charitable projects.  It is gratifying that many companies do put aside staff time and finance for charitable work, while schools have always been sensitive to "those in need" and acted accordingly.

Where partnerships already exist, they could adopt The Literacy in a Box Trust as a project.  If a partnership does not exist, it may well be that the awareness created by a media campaign [2 above] will identify individuals from schools and commerce who would be happy to work together on furthering the work of the Trust.  They could join forces as part of a local community working group and with the common direction of the Trust's work, they would also be able to engage in developing their own partnership, however that evolves.

Suggested action plan:

  • Whether as a result of a media campaign or not, set up a working group comprising individuals from schools, commerce, organisations and the media, then ensure that all members are fully aware of the work of the Trust so that they can, in turn, pass it on to others in a uniform way.  The Trust has a Presentation Pack available for the purpose, illustrating its work to individuals or groups and of course it has the Literacy in a Box Trust web site available to all.
  • Use the individuals of the group to run further meetings for other companies, schools or organisations in your community and so widen the awareness of the Trust's work.
  • Widen the network of awareness in your community further, by involving the media and others as they become interested in the work of the Trust and come forward to offer support.
  • Maximise the potential for donations from the awareness created and ensure that those who want a longer term relationship with the Trust are encouraged to do so by contacting us.

The benefits of these actions:

  • Through working together, schools and commerce, which have much to offer each other, will have shared their experiences and hopefully gained mutually from it.
  • Individuals or those in schools, companies or organisations which actively wish to engage with their community and offer "service" or support to those they feel "are in need" will have been able to do so, through creating the awareness that will eventually, once transferred into donations, help the Trust in reaching its aims.

4. Partnerships with Zambian schools:

For both cultural and educational purposes, schools in this country are encouraged to link with schools in other countries, but it may be that as individuals or as a company or organisation you wish to make this link also.  The Trust has the links with those in Zambia that can facilitate this process

Please contact the Trust, in the first instance, so that we can ensure that the "twinning" is appropriate to the needs of each party.

If having read the plan, you decide that you wish to volunteer to help the Trust, please complete the Volunteer Application Form, indicating how you wish to become involved.
